Pjotr Sapegin's ARIA (Madama Butterfly) Animation

Pjotr Sapegin's ARIA shows the story of a woman who has a child with an American sailor, who is then taken away from her by the same sailor when he returns to where she lives. The woman falls in love with the sailor, who is in her country during wartime, and she becomes pregnant with his child after they spend the night together in a field. She was heartbroken when he left, but he left her his sailor's hat and record player to remember him by. Her pregnancy gives her hope that her lover will return to her, so she holds onto that, raising her daughter as best she can. Her daughter becomes the sole reason for why she fights to live; she fights for her and her daughter's survival. When the sailor returns to her, she has hopes that he is coming back for her and her daughter. However, he only returned for her (but also his) daughter with his new wife and all of their adopted children. This breaks the woman who now has nothing to live for anymore. This causes her to age very rapidly; the animation ends with her ripping herself apart, essentially killing herself. The animation/the opera is the inspiration for the musical "Miss Saigon," which takes place during the Vietnam War.
